Finally, the renovation is complete and you're ready to move in – but can you buy any furniture you like, whenever you like? Many new homeowners in Hong Kong make mistakes at this stage: the bed they bought doesn't fit through the door, the cabinet is too big and blocks the air conditioner, or they didn't leave enough storage space and now regret it... In reality, there's an order to choosing furniture, it's not something you can just do haphazardly.

Why is there an order to choosing furniture?

Hong Kong flats are often only three or four hundred square feet, and every inch of space is precious. If furniture is placed incorrectly, it not only affects the visual appeal but also obstructs movement, wastes storage space, and can even make living uncomfortable every day.

The correct approach is: first decide on "structural furniture" (large, difficult-to-move items), then choose "auxiliary furniture" (small, flexible items), and finally select "decorative furniture" (purely aesthetic). Getting the order wrong will lead to regret.

Step One: Place orders only after flooring and walls are complete

Many people start ordering furniture during the renovation period, but be aware: solid wood furniture requires a stable humidity environment. In newly renovated units in Hong Kong, paint and plaster still release moisture. It's recommended to wait until the floor and paint are completely dry before arranging furniture delivery. Otherwise, the wood may absorb too much moisture, potentially leading to swelling or deformation later on.
